What is Sangha?

Sangha is one of the three jewels of Buddhism:

  • The Buddha, the enlightened one, represents the potential for our own awakening.
  • The Dharma, the path of practice that leads to the realization of our Buddha nature, and
  • The Sangha, “the community of the wise”, is a community of people who follow the teachings of the Buddha.

While Sangha traditionally refers to community of monks and nuns, it also include the community members (laity), who participate in activities and support the temple/monastery.

Humans are social beings, and as such, we thrive in community. No matter what purpose we have in coming together, we do best with each other’s support.

“Taking refuge in the Buddha, we commit ourselves to our own capacity for freedom. Taking refuge in the dharma, we bring the path of awakening to life. Taking refuge in the sangha, we acknowledge our interconnectedness.”
