To take refuge means to find solace and sanctuary in our own awakened body, speech, and mind. It means to commit ourselves wholeheartedly to virtue in every aspect of our lives. Refuge has the connotation of “safety.” We are entering an island of safety from Samsara, the endless cycle of existence from which all our troubles arise. Taking refuge marks our confidence in the teachings, teachers, and community to guide and accompany us on the path of peace.
This one-day retreat marks a sacred threshold in our Mahamudra journey. We began this course by opening the view and establishing a foundation through philosophical teachings and practice. Now, we are entering the heart of the Fivefold Mahamudra Path, beginning with the foundational practices known as Ngöndro. To begin this path fully, we must first walk through the door: taking refuge in the Three Jewels—the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.
This is more than a ritual. It is a commitment to transform our ordinary patterns into extraordinary qualities, to align our life with awakening, and to act for the benefit of all beings. Whether you are taking refuge for the first time or renewing your commitment, this retreat offers a protected and meaningful space to do so.
Note:
Lama Dorje warmly welcomes those who have not been part of the Mahamudra program to take refuge if they feel called. If you wish to participate but are not yet ready to formally take refuge, you are still very welcome to join. Lama will offer a blessing so you may continue engaging with the teachings and practices at your own pace.
9:30 am – Opening and Welcome
We begin the day together, setting our intention and opening the space.
9:30–11:00 am – Refuge Instructions
Drupon Lama Dorje will offer teachings on the meaning and purpose of taking refuge, and how it serves as the entry point into the Mahamudra path.
11:00–11:15 am – Break
11:15 am–1:30 pm – Refuge Ceremony
A traditional ceremony of taking refuge in the Three Jewels, guided by Drupon Lama Dorje.
1:30–3:00 pm – Lunch Break
Time to rest and nourish together.
3:00–5:00 pm – Teachings and Practice
Teachings to support the integration of the refuge vow and deepen our understanding of the path ahead.
5:00 pm – Closing of the Retreat
The retreat will also be broadcast live for those joining from afar. If you are participating online, we ask that you prepare a quiet, undisturbed space and give the day your full attention. The commitment is simply to be present—free from distractions—as if you were with us in person. Once you register, we will share the link to participate online.
The Dharma is always offered freely. There is no cost for receiving the teachings. It is traditional to offer dana (generosity) to the teacher as an expression of gratitude for the transmission of refuge—a protection that extends beyond this life. Offer what you can, from the heart. This offering is separate from any retreat and lodging fees and directly supports the activities of Lama Dorje Foundation.
